Fairhurst was commissioned by Weir LGE Process Ltd to provide comprehensive civil, structural and geotechnical services on this project for the Kharg Oil Company (KOC), the owner of the facility. The project was undertaken as part of a major expansion of KOC’s existing storage facility on Kharg Island, which is located in the Persian Gulf, off the coast of Iran.
The expansion works included diversion of an existing roadway and construction of a road bridge over existing pipework. Also included were the tank foundation and retaining walls illustrated above, and foundations for the tank access stairway and pipe bridge to the tank plus extensive plant, equipment and pipework.
The area is highly seismic and, as a result, all of the design addressed earthquake loading which was derived in accordance with Eurocode 8.
