Why did you select Fairhurst for your graduate placement?
The varied and diverse range of projects that Fairhurst undertook initially attracted me to the company. Following this, at interview, I was promised a large amount of responsibility and spoke to previous students who gave me a better understanding of the type and level of work which I would be involved in.
What projects did you work on in your first year?
In my first year I worked on a variety of projects. Smaller scale projects included the submission of a planning application for a piece of artwork (an upside down bus shelter!) in Northumberland, various planning appraisals for sites throughout the country, and representations on a number of planning policy documents. Larger scale projects included a review of a minerals application at Hollings Hill, which included an assessment of the previous application and the production of an environmental statement and new conditions, and the production of a masterplan for Cambois in Northumberland, which is now being taken forward by developers as a potential eco-town.
What projects are you currently working on?
I am currently project managing the re-development of the Smiths Dock site, a large brownfield riverside site in North Tyneside, for residential development, as well as the preparation of evidence for an appeal hearing for the refusal of a residential development against officer recommendation.
What advice would you give to students looking for a placement?
Do not limit yourself to a certain area of planning, or certain firms. Be comfortable in what you know, and be honest in your past experience, it is often not all about what you already know, but what you can learn.
What advice would you give to students beginning a placement?
Get involved in as many projects and activities as possible, not only in the work place, but socially as well, as its important to build good relationships with your colleagues. Also, don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Where do you see your career developing in the next 5 years?
I hope to move up to a senior position within the firm, focusing on legal elements of the planning process, while expanding my own Client base.
Fairhurst welcome applications for advertised positions and general applications for future consideration.
Before you register with a recruitment agent, have you considered approaching us directly?
Recruitment agents charge a fee to the employer which limits our options to pay enhanced salaries.
If you join us without the involvement of a recruitment agent, we can look to pay welcome bonuses and better salaries.
Full details will be discussed at interview.
